A New Superwind Wolf - Rayet Galaxy Mrk 1259

We report the discovery of a starburst-driven wind (superwind) from the starburst nucleus galaxy Mrk 1259. The estimated number ratio of Wolf-Rayet (WR) to O stars amounts to ≃ 0.09. While the nuclear emission-line region is due to usual photoionization by massive stars, the circumnuclear emission-line regions show anomalous line ratios that can be due to cooling shocks. Since the host galaxy s...

The interacting Wolf - Rayet galaxy Mkn 8

We present results of narrow-band and broad-band optical CCD imaging together with intermediate-resolution spectroscopy of the Wolf-Rayet galaxy Mkn 8. Analysis of the morphology and kinematics of the object indicates that the strong star formation episode we are witnessing in Mkn 8 is the product of the interaction of two (or three) disk galaxies. The chemical abundances and abundance ratios m...

ISO observations of Wolf - Rayet galaxy Haro 3 ?

Observations of the blue compact dwarf galaxy Haro 3 have been obtained with the ISOCAM and ISOPHOT instruments on the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The PHT-S spectrum (6-12 m) is dominated by four emission bands that are frequently attributed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and strong SIV emission. Two CAM filters, LW6 (78.5 m) and LW3 (12-18 m) were used to map the galaxy. The ...

We report results of CO (J = 1-0) mapping observations of the Wolf-Rayet starburst galaxy Mrk 1259 which has optical evidence for the superwind seen from a nearly pole-on view. The CO emission is detected in the central 4 kpc region. The nuclear CO spectrum shows a blue-shifted (∆V ≃ −27 km s) broad (FWHM ≃ 114 km s) component as well as the narrow one (FWHM ≃ 68 km s). The off-nuclear CO spect...

Metallicity Dependent Wolf-Rayet Winds

Observational and theoretical evidence in support of metallicity dependent winds for Wolf-Rayet stars is considered. Well known differences in Wolf-Rayet subtype distributions in the Milky Way, LMC and SMC may be attributed to the sensitivity of subtypes to wind density. Implications for Wolf-Rayet stars at low metallicity include a hardening of ionizing flux distributions, an increased WR popu...
